Principles for Selecting Bottom-Discharge Valves for Autoclaves
For high-pressure reactors with larger volumes, customers often request the installation of a valve at the bottom of the reactor to facilitate material discharge or reduce the number of times the reactor lid needs to be opened. For users, selecting the right type of valve is crucial, as using a valve that doesn't match the characteristics of the reaction materials can frequently lead to valve damage or excessive residual material remaining inside the reactor. Generally speaking, there are several types of valves commonly chosen for high-pressure reactors used by customers, with ball valves and gate valves (also known as top-and-bottom valves) being the two main options. Depending on the state of the material being discharged, ball valves are primarily used in reactors handling solid materials such as powders and granules. If the material temperature is too high...

For high-pressure reactors with larger capacities, customers often request the installation of a valve at the bottom of the reactor to facilitate material discharge or reduce the number of times the reactor lid needs to be opened. For users, selecting the right type of valve is crucial, as using a valve that doesn't match the characteristics of the reaction materials can frequently lead to valve damage or significant residual material remaining inside the reactor. Generally, there are several types of valves commonly chosen for high-pressure reactors by users, with ball valves and gate valves (also known as top-and-bottom valves) being the two most prevalent.
Depending on the state of the material being discharged, ball valves are primarily used in high-pressure reactors handling solid materials such as powders and granules. If the material temperature is excessively high, a steel-body PTFE-lined bottom-mounted ball valve can also be employed. This type of ball valve features a stepped downward design; once opened, the material flows directly into the pipeline without any dead corners. Unlike enamel-lined bottom valves, which tend to leave residual material in the gap between the ball and the lower bolt after closure—resulting in impurities—this design prevents blockages even with larger particles and is easy to clean.
The slide valve is primarily used for discharging liquid materials and can ensure that there are no dead corners during the discharge process. Depending on the bottom configuration of the installed autoclave, slide valves are classified into top-slide and bottom-slide types. In a top-slide valve, the valve core moves internally within the valve body when it opens or closes; in a bottom-slide valve, the valve core moves between the valve body and the tank body during operation—thus, when the valve is fully open, the valve core extends into the tank body. Like a conventional globe valve, the top-slide valve operates internally within the valve body.
