Laboratory Reactor: The baffle in the laboratory reactor works under the action of the impeller's stirring.
Typically, the radial installation width of four baffles can meet this requirement. But what exactly do these baffles do? Let’s take a look at how the baffles in a laboratory reactor function when the agitator is stirring. 1. Two Types of Flow Patterns: As the impeller receives external energy and begins to rotate on its own, mechanical energy is first transferred to a small area of fluid nearby, causing intense turbulence throughout the height of the reactor. As these turbulent vortices spread outward, a high-speed jet starts to push the slower-moving liquid around it, setting off large-scale circulating flows within the vessel along specific paths and thus forming the flow pattern of the concentrated material inside the mixing tank. Different types of impellers can generate different flow patterns.

Typically, the radial installation width of four baffles can meet this requirement. So, what exactly are baffles used for? Let’s take a look at what happens when the agitator is stirring: Laboratory reactor How the baffle works.
1. In two types of flow regimes, when the impeller is driven by an external source and begins to rotate on its own, mechanical energy is first transferred to a small area of nearby fluid, causing intense turbulence throughout the reactor vessel. As turbulent vortices propagate outward, a high-speed jet starts to push the slower-moving liquid around it, setting up large-scale circulating flows within the vessel along specific pathways and thus forming the flow pattern of the concentrated material inside the mixing tank. Different types of impellers can generate distinct flow patterns, which are categorized into axial-flow patterns and radial-flow patterns. An axial-flow impeller allows the liquid to enter and exit axially; whereas a radial-flow impeller enables the liquid to enter axially and discharge radially.
2. Laboratory reactor The baffle structure and its critical role: When the impeller stirs a liquid with relatively low viscosity, the high-speed rotation of the impeller generates a tangential flow under the action of centrifugal force. This flow causes the liquid to be flung outward toward the vessel walls and continuously rise along the perimeter of the reactor, while the liquid level in the center naturally drops. As a result, a large cavity forms within the reactor. This phenomenon can be referred to as... “Vortexing.” The liquid being stirred rotates closely along with the搅拌 shaft, failing to achieve well-developed mixing. In multiphase systems without stirring, phase separation or layering may occur. For highly viscous liquids, this can lead to significant air entrainment at the liquid surface, reducing the apparent density of the liquid and subjecting the搅拌 shaft to varying degrees of force, causing it to vibrate vigorously. Therefore, industrial enterprises should generally avoid vortexing as much as possible. One effective approach is to install baffles around the vessel wall, thereby transforming the tangential flow pattern into axial or radial flow.
When the propeller behind the baffle is installed in the reactor, the baffle intercepts the longitudinal spiral vortex flow of the liquid, creating upward and downward counterflows along the vertical direction of the liquid surface.
