Precautions for Operating Laboratory Reactors
The stainless steel high-pressure reactor system is a chemical reaction mixing device designed for three-phase processes involving gas-liquid-liquid, liquid-solid, or gas-liquid-solid mixtures. Various chemical raw materials can be thoroughly mixed under high temperature, high pressure, and vacuum conditions, thereby enhancing mass and heat transfer processes.

A malfunction occurred in the laboratory reactor at the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is reported that the student improperly operated the high-pressure reactor and opened the lid, resulting in abnormal high temperature and high pressure conditions.
Besides shock and sadness, we’ve been repeatedly pondering a question: Each laboratory reactor is certified to meet the factory inspection standards, and comes with detailed instructions and precautions. These instructions specifically state that after symmetrically tightening the feed screws, once the equipment has naturally cooled down to room temperature, you should neither open the lid nor remove it under pressure! So why do we still see accidents of various kinds every year? Could you please explain the specific characteristics of the autoclave involved in this accident?
The stainless steel high-pressure reactor system is a chemical reaction mixing device designed for three-phase processes involving gas-liquid-liquid, liquid-solid, or gas-liquid-solid mixtures. Various chemical raw materials can be thoroughly mixed under high temperature, high pressure, and vacuum conditions, thereby enhancing mass and heat transfer processes.
This design employs a static sealing structure, replacing dynamic seals with static ones. The agitator and motor drive are connected via a magnetic coupling, enabling contactless torque transmission. This approach effectively addresses the issue of material leakage caused by inadequate sealing in direct-agitation systems, ensuring that both the entire medium and the agitating components operate in a completely sealed environment. The stainless steel autoclave is particularly well-suited for stirring and reacting various flammable, explosive, highly toxic, valuable, and other chemically aggressive media with strong permeability. It is an ideal leak-free reaction vessel for processes such as vulcanization, fluorination, and hydrogenation in industries including petroleum, chemical engineering, organic synthesis, polymer material polymerization, and food processing.
1. The reactor body and lid are fabricated using high-quality, traditionally recognized stainless steel through advanced processing techniques. The reactor body, made of stainless steel, is connected to the flange via a threaded joint. The reactor lid is a flat, solid-type lid. The two components are secured together by a circumferentially evenly distributed system of main bolts and nuts.
2. The main sealing interface of the pressure vessel uses a Type A double-seal design, while other sealing points employ sealing configurations featuring line contact between arc surfaces and flat surfaces, or between arc surfaces themselves. The excellent sealing performance is achieved through the high precision and smoothness of these contact surfaces.
According to the “Safety Operating Procedures for High-Temperature and Pressure Reactors,” normal operations by laboratory reactor operators are completely safe. The cause of such accidents, however, lies not only in the general negligence of laboratory safety management and improper experimental procedures, but also in mental carelessness and complacency. The dangers lurking all around us far exceed those posed by the reactor itself. Faced with the painful lessons learned from these incidents, what could possibly be more important than our own lives? We don’t know whether tomorrow or an unexpected accident will come first—but what we can—and must—do is strictly adhere to laboratory safety regulations, take a proactive approach in every experiment, and follow the equipment’s operating instructions for laboratory reactors meticulously.
The above is a summary of the precautions for operating laboratory reactors. If you’d like to learn more, feel free to contact us anytime! Our company has many years of experience and looks forward to having you join us at any time.
